Terms of Service

WriteTheRest is run by Alex Lougheed (trading as WriteTheRest), a sole trader in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). Contact: legal@write-the-rest.alexlougheed.dev. Postal address: available on request by emailing legal@write-the-rest.alexlougheed.dev.

These Terms, together with our Community Guidelines, Copyright Policy and Privacy Policy, are the agreement between you and us when you use WriteTheRest. By creating an account or posting content you accept them.

You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. You confirm this when you sign in.

WriteTheRest does not allow sexually explicit content, so there is no adults-only section.

You sign in with Google or Discord. One person per account; do not create extra accounts to evade a suspension or to manipulate voting. You are responsible for activity on your account.

Pen names let you publish without showing your real name. You must not use them to impersonate someone else or to get around a moderation decision.

Closing your account. You can delete your account at any time from your account page. This permanently deletes your profile, pen names, prompts, stories, comments and votes. Other people's stories and replies are not deleted: prompts they wrote stories for, and comments they replied to, stay as blank “deleted” placeholders with nothing that identifies you. We cannot restore a deleted account.

You keep ownership of what you post. By posting, you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, format and display your content on WriteTheRest, including in previews, search results and link previews (for example when someone shares a link), so that we can run the service.

When the licence ends. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies that remain for a limited time in backups or caches, or that we must keep to deal with a report, complaint or legal requirement.

You promise that you have the right to post your content and that it follows these Terms. If you use AI tools to help write something, you remain responsible for it as if you wrote it yourself.

Our Community Guidelines explain the rules in plain language. In short, you must not post content that:

• is illegal, including any sexual content involving minors, even in fiction;
• harasses, threatens, doxxes or incites hatred against anyone;
• encourages suicide, self-harm or eating disorders;
• is sexually explicit (describes sexual activity in graphic detail), whatever its rating;
• infringes someone else's copyright or other rights;
• is spam, malware, or deceptive;
• reveals someone else's private information.

English only. Prompts, stories and comments must be written in English so that we can moderate them. Our systems may reject content that is not detected as English.

Ratings. You must give each prompt and story an accurate content rating: General, Teen or Mature. Mature is the highest rating; there is no Explicit rating. We may change a wrong rating or remove the content, and we will remove sexually explicit content if it is reported or we find it.

You can report any story, prompt or comment using the Report link on it. You don't need an account to report. You can also email legal@write-the-rest.alexlougheed.dev. We aim to review reports within 14 days. Reports about illegal content or child safety are treated as a priority and reviewed as soon as reasonably possible, and we may hide the content straight away while we review it. These timings are aims, not guarantees.

We may hide or remove content, change its rating, warn you, or suspend or close your account if it breaks these Terms or the Community Guidelines, if we reasonably believe it is illegal, or if we reasonably need to protect other users or the service. A suspended account cannot sign in or post, but can still download its data or be deleted from the account page while any existing session lasts, or on request by email. Where it is safe and lawful, we will tell you what we did and why.

Appeals and complaints. If you think we got a decision wrong, whether we removed your content, suspended your account, or did not act on your report, email legal@write-the-rest.alexlougheed.dev with “Appeal” in the subject line within 30 days, with a link to the content and your reason. A person will review the decision; we aim to respond within 30 days. You can use the same address for any other complaint about how we handle reports or run WriteTheRest.

If you believe content on WriteTheRest infringes your copyright, follow the notice process in our Copyright Policy. We close the accounts of repeat infringers.

WriteTheRest uses community votes (InkDrops) to surface content. Rankings reflect votes and are not endorsements by us. Do not manipulate votes, for example with extra accounts.

WriteTheRest is free. You can support it with a voluntary donation through Ko-fi. Donations are gifts: they do not buy any features, ranking, influence over moderation, or other benefit, and are handled by Ko-fi under its own terms. Refunds are at our discretion, subject to your legal rights.

You can stop using WriteTheRest and delete your account at any time.

We may suspend your account, without notice where necessary, if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, or if we need to in order to comply with the law. Content removed for breaking the rules may be retained privately for up to 12 months as a record of the decision, and may be shared with law enforcement where the law requires it. This is a maximum, not a promise: if you delete your account, your removed content is deleted with it.

We may also end the service altogether, with reasonable notice where we can give it. If we do, we will try to give you time to download your data.

We provide WriteTheRest free of charge, “as is” and “as available”. We do not promise that it will always be available or error-free. Content posted by users is the responsibility of the person who posted it, not us.

We are not liable for losses that were not foreseeable, for business losses, or for content posted by other users. Because the service is free, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to £100.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that the law does not allow us to limit, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

We may update these Terms, for example to reflect new features or legal requirements. We will post the new version here with an updated date and, for material changes, tell signed-in users on the site before the change takes effect. If you do not agree to the new Terms, you can delete your account.

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Please contact us first so we can try to resolve any problem. If we cannot, the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, but if you live elsewhere in the UK or in the EU you can also bring a claim in your local courts and keep the protections of your local consumer law.
